Saving passwords in your browser might seem convenient — until it isn’t. Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox all store credentials in plain view to anyone who gains access to your device or account. Unlike dedicated password managers, browser storage lacks encryption, multifactor authentication (MFA), and oversight.

Here’s a quick five-step plan to lock down your logins and reduce risk — all in under ten minutes.

1. Know the Risk (1 minute)
When you log in, browsers decrypt stored passwords automatically. That means malware or unauthorized users can see or steal them instantly.

2. Use a Password Manager (3 minutes)
Switch to a dedicated solution such as 1PasswordBitwarden, or Keeper. These tools encrypt your credentials, support MFA, and perform password audits. Once imported, delete all passwords saved in your browser.

3. Turn Off Browser Autofill (2 minutes)
Disable password-saving features in each browser:

  • Chrome: Settings → Autofill → Passwords → Turn off “Offer to save passwords.”
  • Edge: Profiles → Passwords → Turn off saving.
  • Safari: Preferences → Passwords → Uncheck Autofill.

4. Add MFA and Secure Backups (2 minutes)
Pair your accounts with an authenticator app or hardware key. Store backup recovery codes securely — ideally inside your password manager or offline.

5. Review Quarterly (2 minutes)
Revisit your browsers every few months to confirm no passwords remain and update any weak or reused credentials.

Cybersecurity isn’t only about firewalls or antivirus tools — it’s about the small habits that protect your most sensitive data. Take ten minutes this week to move your passwords into a secure manager and disable browser storage. It’s one of the simplest ways to strengthen your digital defenses.
