Tired of spam calls, overflowing credit offers, and marketing emails? You’re not alone. Beyond the annoyance, unsolicited messages create clutter, waste time, and can increase your risk of scams or data exposure.

Use this step-by-step checklist to dramatically cut junk communication using official registries, trusted opt-outs, and built-in privacy tools.

1) Stop Spam Calls & Texts (3 minutes)

  • National Do Not Call Registry: Add your numbers at donotcall.gov.
  • Carrier call protection: Turn on your carrier’s tools (AT&T Call Protect, Verizon Call Filter, T-Mobile Scam Shield).
  • Silence unknown numbers: iPhone (Settings → Phone → Silence Unknown Callers); Android (Settings → Block Unknown/Private).
  • Texts: Reply STOP only to recognized, legitimate senders. For spam texts, don’t tap links—report by forwarding to 7726 (SPAM).
  • Optional apps: RoboKiller, Nomorobo, or Hiya for extra filtering.

2) Reduce Credit Card & Insurance Mailers (3 minutes)

  • Firm offers: optoutprescreen.com (5-year digital opt-out or permanent by mail).
  • Direct mail marketing: https://dmachoice.org/ (10-year suppression).
  • Catalogs: CatalogChoice.org to stop individual titles.
  • Your banks/issuers: Opt out of marketing info-sharing in privacy settings or by phone.

3) Tame Marketing Emails (5 minutes)

  • Unsubscribe from senders you recognize (link in footer). If anything looks suspicious, don’t click—mark as spam/junk instead.
  • Bulk clean-up tools: Unroll.Me, Clean Email (optional).
  • Use aliases for signups:
    • Gmail “+tag”: jane.doe+StoreA@gmail.com → filter or auto-label.
    • Apple “Hide My Email” (iCloud+): create random aliases you can disable later.
  • Pro tip: Uncheck “Yes, email me offers” boxes when creating new accounts.

4) Cut Physical Junk Mail (2 minutes + ongoing)

  • Use the opt-out info printed on mailers (web or phone) to stop at the source.
  • For misaddressed or unwanted pieces: write “Refused—Return to Sender” (unopened).
  • Shred “official-looking” offers to reduce identity-theft risk.

5) Add Extra Protection (2 minutes)

  • Credit freeze with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion (free; unlock when needed).
  • Monitoring (optional): enable alerts for new accounts or large changes.
  • Report violators:

Keep it going (monthly 5-minute tidy)

Set a calendar reminder: clear 10–15 messages, unsubscribe from two senders, and review one privacy setting. Small steps compound quickly.

Note: Guidance above is U.S.-focused. Always verify links and avoid clicking in suspicious messages.

Security isn’t just firewalls, it’s trust. Start with these steps, then review your customer touchpoints to make fraud harder and clarity easier. For more practical guides, visit our blogs or reach out with questions.
