Seven Question with Principal Software Engineer, John Murphy!

Meet John Murphy! He’s our Principal Software Engineer at RiskExec and this April, we celebrated his 5th anniversary with our team!

Describe what you do at Asurity in 3 words or less.
JM: I build RiskExec.

How did you discover your passion for software programming/engineering?
JM: I have always enjoyed math and logic, so programming came naturally to me.

What is your favorite place in the world, and why?
JM: I’m not sure it’s my favorite (it’s a big world!), but I really enjoyed visiting Vietnam, and I’d love to go back.

What is one thing you love to do outside of work?
JM: I love ballet and opera. I go to lots of shows at home in DC, and also when traveling.

If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, past or present, who would it be?
JM: Albert Einstein. I love his combination of great intelligence, humor, and passion for social justice.

What energizes you at work?
JM: I really enjoy collaborating with the RiskExec team on new projects. Starting with an idea, turning that into a design with requirements, figuring out the architecture, and then actually implementing and delivering the product is very satisfying.

What advice would you give to someone entering the industry?
JM: Write lots of code and keep learning. The best way to become a better programmer is to practice at it. There’s really no substitute for experience. Once you get better at it, remain curious and keep learning. The programming you’re doing now is not what you should be doing in 5 or 10 years. The state-of-the-art changes quickly.
